He inherited about 1,000 acres on Bridges Creek in Westmoreland from his father (the Little Hunting Creek property went to his sister Mildred). When Augustine came of age (an 2 CONC d into his inheritance) in 1715, he married Jane Butler, an orphan, who had inherited about 640 acres from her father. The young couple settled on the Bridges Creek property. 2 CONT In 1718, Augustine purchased land on Popes Creek, abridging his property on Bridges Creek and about 1726, built a new house there (later called Wakefield ). In the same year, he purchased the Little Hunting Cree 2 CONC k property from his sister, Mildred. In addition to planting, Augustine was active in the church and in local politics, serving at various times as justice of the peace and as county sheriff. 2 CONT Augustine and Jane had four children, only two of whom (Lawrence and Augustine, Jr.) lived to adulthood. After Jane's early death in 1729, Augustine married 23-year-old Mary Ball of Lancaster County in 1731. Three children were born to Augustin 2 CONC e and Mary at Popes Creek - George (1732), Betty (1733), and Samuel (1734). 2 CONT In 1735, the family moved to the Little Hunting Creek property. The exact reason for the move is unclear, but it may have had to do with Augustine's other occupation - iron mining. In 1725, Augustine entered into an agreement with the Principio Co 2 CONC mpany of England to start an iron works on Accokeek Creek in Stafford County. In 1728, Augustine made an agreement with the company to bear one sixth of the cost of running Accokeek Furnace. Little Hunting Creek was a bit closer to the iron min 2 CONC e than Pope's Creek, so that may have been among the reasons for the move. 2 CONT In 1738, a 150-acre property just across the Rappahannock River from the fledgling town of Fredericksburg, became available. Formerly owned by William Strother, the property was sold by his executors to Augustine who moved the family there at th 2 CONC e end of that same year. The new property offered easier access to Accokeek Furnace and was within a day's ride of both Little Hunting Creek and Popes Creek. Augustine also leased a 450-acre parcel adjacent to the property that he later purchase 2 CONC d outright. Although there was a ferry road and landing on the property, the farm was not called Ferry Farm during the time of the Washington's occupation. 2 CONT By the time the family had moved to the Rappahannock River farm, two more children were born; John Augustine, 1736 and Charles, 1738. A sixth child, Mildred, was born on the new farm in 1739 but she died in infancy in 1740. 2 CONT After Augustine's death in 1743, the Fredericksburg property went to George, but since he was only 11 years old, his mother, Mary, managed the property for him. She remained on the property until 1772, when George finally moved her to a house acr 2 CONC oss the river in Fredericksburg. The Little Hunting Creek property went to Lawrence, and the Popes Creek property went to Augustine, Jr. Lawrence renamed his property Mount Vernon, in honor of an Admiral Vernon he had served with in the British Na 2 CONC vy during the Battle of Cartagena. 2 CONT According to the terms of Augustine's will , if Lawrence died without issue, the Little Hunting Creek property would be given to Augustine, Jr. who would then have to give Popes Creek to George. If Augustine, Jr. did not want the Little Hunting Cr 2 CONC eek property, it would then go to George. Lawrence had no living children when he died and Augustine, Jr. was apparently not interested in giving up Popes Creek. Lawrence's widow, Ann, had a life interest in the property but, because she remarrie 2 CONC d and was not living at Mount Vernon, leased the property to George beginning in 1754. Upon her death in 1761, George inherited the property outright. 1 SOUR @S1@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F3@ 1 FAMS @F4@ 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Ball/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1708 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1789 1 RESI 2 PLAC Epping Forest, Lancaster Co., VA,U.S.A. 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S1@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F3@ 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME Betty /Washington/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 JUN 1733 2 PLAC Wakefield, Westmoreland Co., VA ,USA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 31 MAR 1797 2 PLAC Western View, Culpeper Co. At that time, the property was about 1,850 acres in size. He also inherited another property farther up the Potomac River known as Little Hu 2 CONC nting Creek, about 2,500 acres in size. 2 CONT Lawrence was educated in England and trained as a lawyer. He appears to have been more interested in politics and the law than in planting — he added only about 1,000 acres to his holdings by the time of his death in 1698 at the age of 37. 2 CONT Lawrence married Mildred Warner, one of the three daughters and heiresses of Augustine Warner of Gloucester Co., VA. After Augustine's death, Warner Hall passed to his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, who was married to John Lewis . Mildred and Lawrenc 2 CONC e had three children - John (the eldest), Augustine, and Mildred. 2 CONT After Lawrence's death, his widow married George Gale, who moved the family to Whitehaven on the west coast of England. She died there in 1701 after a difficult childbirth. 2 CONT After Mildred's death, Lawrence's cousin, John Washington, successfully petitioned the courts for guardianship of the children and returned them to Virginia in 1704. They lived with him for several years on Chotank Creek, near the western borde 2 CONC r of Westmoreland Co. As guardian, John was given full use of the land inherited by the children. 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F5@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I17@ INDI 1 NAME John /Washington/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1692 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1746 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @I18@ INDI 1 NAME Mildred /Warner/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE CAL 1666 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F5@ 1 FAMC @F9@ 0 @I19@ INDI 1 NAME Mildred /Washington/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1696 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1747 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMC @F5@ 0 @I20@ INDI 1 NAME John /Washington/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1631 2 PLAC Purleigh, Essex, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1677 2 PLAC Westmoreland Co., VA,U.S.A. 1 NOTE Born around 1631 in England, John emigrated to the Virginia colonies in 1656. Tradition has it that John traveled to the colonies on a trading venture aboard the Seahorse of London. The idea was to trade European goods for tobacco. The ship, lade 2 CONC n with tobacco, was sailing down the Potomac river when it struck an uncharted shoal. About that time, a storm came up and the ship was sunk, ruining the valuable cargo of tobacco. 2 CONT The ship sank near The Cliffs, a plantation owned by Nathaniel Pope. Pope befriended the young Washington and, fortunately for John, had a marriageable daughter named Anne. John and Anne were married in 1658 and received a wedding gift of 700 acre 2 CONC s on Mattox Creek from her father. John and Anne had four children together, two of whom died in childhood. After Anne's death, John married twice more before his death in 1677. According to some sources, John may have been married before he emigr 2 CONC ated to Virginia (before he married Anne) and may have had two children by her, both of whom died in infancy and before his marriage to Anne. No record is known to exist of this first marriage or when his first wife (if it was not Anne) died. 2 CONT During his lifetime, he was active in local politics and served for a time in the Virginia House of Burgesses. He actively acquired land and, by the time of his death, owned more than 8,500 acres. 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F8@ 0 @I21@ INDI 1 NAME Anne /Pope/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE CAL 1638 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMS @F8@ 1 FAMC @F10@ 0 @I22@ INDI 1 NAME Anne /Washington/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1658 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1697 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I23@ INDI 1 NAME Richard /Washington/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1660 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I24@ INDI 1 NAME John /Washington/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1661 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1698 1 SOUR @S3@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 0 @I25@ INDI 1 NAME Fielding /Lewis/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 7 JUL 1725 2 PLAC Warner Hall, Gloucester Co., VA, U.S.A. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 7 DEC 1781 2 PLAC Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA,USA 1 NOTE Fielding Lewis, was a highly respected leader in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County, who served at various times as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses.
